Charleston, SC

Our last stop on our Southern road trip was Charleston, SC. On our drive over from Savannah, we made an afternoon stop at Coligny Beach at Hilton Head Island. If we were spending an entire day at Hilton Head, I would have liked to rent a bike and explore. I was particularly excited for visit Charleston since it has been on several lists of America’s best cities.

Our first night in Charleston, we visited the Old City Market for some souvenir shopping. We had dinner at FIG, which stands for food is good. We started with the clams and pork shoulder spaghetti as well as the ricotta gnocchi with beef bolognese. For ur entree, we split the sauteed soft shell crabs.  For the sweet finish, we had the sticky sorghum cake, which was like a sticky toffee cake.

The next morning, we checked out breakfast at Hominy Grill. I got the Charleston Nasty Biscuit, which was a fried chicken breast between two halves of a biscuit, covered in gravy and cheese. Shrimp and grits is also one of their popular dishes.

We took a two hour walking tour with Michael of Charleston Footprints Tour, learning about the historic district and the various landmarks. We walked down to the Charleston Harbor and could see Fort Sumter across the water. Fort Sumter was where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. I found the Charleston homes to be extremely charming.

Lunch was at Butcher & Bee. Their menu is posted daily on their Facebook. I had the roast beef and my dad had the pastrami. He said it was the best pastrami he ever had.

Our afternoon was spent at Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. This is where Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively got married. The plantation is also used for TV and movie filming, most notable for me was The Notebook. We did a tour of the main home, which the current owner still lives in, attended a Gullah show, and took the plantation coach tour. The plantation is still active; it was amazing to see how much produce the plantation produces. They grow pecans, strawberries, tomatoes, blueberries, peaches, corn, etc. My favorite part was definitely the Avenue of Oaks.

Our busy day ended with dinner at Husk, which serves Southern farm-to-table food. We started with pig ear lettuce wraps, which were extremely crunchy. It was like eating small pieces of bacon. We had the swordfish with squash, zucchini, sweet corn, onion, and shrimp bisque as well as the cornmeal dusted catfish with crispy kale and rice with sausage. With all that food, we decided to take a walk to the Waterfront Park to see the pineapple fountain and a walk along Battery Park.
