I recently did a mini-road trip in the South for a week. My first stop was a 24 hour beach getaway in Outer Banks, North Carolina. Outer Banks (OBX) is a string of islands and towns on the coast of North Carolina.
On the North Carolina license plate, there is the slogan “First in Flight”. This is because the Wright Brothers had their first flight in Kill Devil Hills, which is a town in Outer Banks. There is a national memorial to commemorate their achievement.
Near the Wright Brothers Memorial is Jockey’s Ridge State Park. It is one of the tallest sand dunes in the US. I felt like I was in a large sand box, running up and down the sand dunes. This would be a fun spot to fly a kite. People can also go hang gliding at Jockey’s Ridge.
There are several lighthouses scattered throughout the Outer Banks. The most well-known of the lighthouses is the Cape Hatteras one. We bought tickets to climb to the top of the lighthouse for a great, extensive view. There were 248 steps on the spiral staircase. Don’t worry, there are small landings for you to catch your breath.
We had a filling dinner of calamari, crab cakes, fish & chips, and of course blue moon at Blue Moon Beach Grill.
Since we were on the East Coast, we decided to catch the sunrise over the ocean from the Kitty Hawk Pier. Afterwards, we got donuts at Duck Donuts. Their donuts are like cake donuts. You can customize your combination of coating and toppings. I got one with maple icing and bacon.
